Summer Program

Spanish around the World

countries

Participant will be exposed to a series of cultural lessons in which students take imaginary trips to actual Spanish-speaking countries — learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary while exploring each country's culture and geography and celebrate various holidays and customs. Songs and dances play a key role and reinforce the Spanish Cultural Curriculum. Music lessons for kids not only improve their memorization and small motor skills, but also strongly contribute to improve their self-confidence. It is truly rewarding when a child reaches a pre-set goal or milestone; whether that is learning a new song, performing in front of others or just finding enjoyment in learning a new language.

Participants will be grouped according to grade level. They will choose a dance/song to be performed at the end of the 4th and 8th week.

Week 1 and Week 2 : Un Viaje Internacional

Participants take imaginary trips to Spanish- speaking countries, make their own passports, learn vocabulary describing personal information, identify places around the world, and discuss methods of transportation used for international travel. Songs, dances, and art projects reinforce their learning.

Week 3 and Week 4: Vamos a Mexico!

Participants use their pre-made passports to travel to Mexico. They identify more places around the world; learn/practice vocabulary describing personal information. They learn about Mexico’s customs, traditions, and holiday celebrations (Cinco de Mayo). Songs, games, chants and poems enrich the learning experience. Art project: Making own piñata (it takes several days to complete the project).

Week 5 and Week 6: Tapas en España

Participants journey through their imaginations and visit Spain. They use their pre-made passport and add the Spain flag. They learn about traditional flamenco music, sing Spanish folk songs about food, enjoy stories, and poems. They taste several foods that are typically served in Spain. Culinary art project: Tapas (appetizers).

Week 7 and Week 8 Vamos al Caribbe!

Participants take an imaginary trip to Cuba. They use their pre-made passport and add more flags. They identify more Spanish-speaking countries and talk about Cuba’s tropical geography. They identify tropical flora and fauna. They learn about Cuba’s food, and sing topic related songs. They make own maracas and dance the Cuban music.
