Summer Camp Program

Ballroom and Hip hop/Jazz

Instructor: Adrian Bermudez

The objective of the Ballroom program is to introduce the students to the fun and joy of partner dancing. Through partner dancing they will develop skills in teamwork and social relations. The program offers Smooth dances (Fox Trot and/or Waltz) and Rhythm dances (Salsa and/or Swing). In this way the program introduces the students to a wide variety of rhythms and step patterns which will develop them into versatile dancers. This is one half of this dance program, with Hip hop/ jazz being the other half.

Hip hop and Jazz combined is the style of dance that is choreographed for a great amount of the current popular music. Both styles complement each other quite naturally. It is ensemble or solo dancing. The student will learn to master many patterns at a slow and fast pace. It is a lot of fun and develops focus and coordination.

Ballroom or partner dancing gives the pupil the skills to dance with another pupil while in physical contact with complete synchronization, while Hip hop/ jazz allows the pupil to dance by themselves or in an ensemble fashion with others, executing the exact same step patterns. Both styles develop self confidence and pride.

No special shoes are needed for either of these styles, however leather soled shoes are recommended for the Ballroom and light tennis shoes for Hip hop/ jazz.

The programs are offered in four different durations of time: one week. two weeks, four weeks or eight weeks. The following pages give a brief description of each program.

Ballroom/Salsa and Hip hop/ Jazz

1 week

The program time is divided into two separate sections within the time allotted.

In the first section the instructor teaches a half-hour of Slow Waltz and then a half-hour of Salsa. The second section is the instruction of Hip hop/ Jazz. Each dance is initially presented with a brief but informative history of the dance. Here is a breakdown of the week to week programs starting with Ballroom/ Salsa.

In the Slow Waltz and Salsa the student learns proper body frame for each dance. They learn four different step patterns in each dance which they will be able to dance with ease by the end of the week.

2 week

In this program the class continues with Waltz and Salsa. Two to four more step patterns are introduced but review of the material from the first week is continuous to assure the memorization of all the step patterns.

4 week

In this program, since there is more time, two more dances are added to the curriculum. These dances are the Fox Trot and the East coast swing. The Fox Trot is a smooth dance like the slow waltz and the Swing a rhythm dance like Salsa. The goal is for the students to learn four step patterns in each dance and combine those patterns in different choreographic combinations which produce a wealth of dance with a few patterns. More patterns will be added according to the general ability of the class. At the end of 4 weeks there will be a demonstration of the dances.

8 week

This program is an expansion on the previous 4 weeks. No new dances will be added, however 4 more step patterns will be added to each dance. It means that each student will have to focus even more so to retain all the dance material presented to them. It also means they will be gaining more dance vocabulary to use in the future. There will be a demonstration show at the end of this program.

Hip hop/ Jazz dance

1 week

In this program the students will learn a short routine lasting no longer than

one minute. This routine will include a combination of standard Jazz and Hip hop step patterns blended together to achieve a short but dynamic dance.

It will include triple steps, 3 step turns, body waves or ripples, kicks, glides and others. The students will develop coordination and poise and definition of body movements. The class meets 1 hour a day for 5 days.

2 week

This program will add more step patterns and also end with a more challenging dance routine of no more than a minute. By the way, one minute

is a lot of dance steps. This class meets 1 hour a day for 10 days.

4 week

This program introduces more challenging steps which will form a routine lasting no longer than 2 minutes and will be presented at the end of the dance sessions.

8 week

In this program the class will work on a 2 minute routine which will develop them into very musical and coordinated dancers. You will be very proud of their efforts as you see them dancing on the dance floor performing their routine.

By the way, for any of you parents who may have concerns of the level of difficulty of these programs, none of this dancing includes any dangerous moves like spinning on backs or heads. It is safe dancing.

Building Kidz

Summer Program

Spanish around the World

Participant will be exposed to a series of cultural lessons in which students take imaginary trips to actual Spanish-speaking countries — learning and practicing Spanish vocabulary while exploring each country's culture and geography and celebrate various holidays and customs. Songs and dances play a key role and reinforce the Spanish Cultural Curriculum. Music lessons for kids not only improve their memorization and small motor skills, but also strongly contribute to improve their self-confidence. It is truly rewarding when a child reaches a pre-set goal or milestone; whether that is learning a new song, performing in front of others or just finding enjoyment in learning a new language.

Participants will be grouped according to grade level. They will choose a dance/song to be performed at the end of the 4th and 8th week.

Week 1 and Week 2 : Un Viaje Internacional

Participants take imaginary trips to Spanish- speaking countries, make their own passports, learn vocabulary describing personal information, identify places around the world, and discuss methods of transportation used for international travel. Songs, dances, and art projects reinforce their learning.

Week 3 and Week 4: Vamos a Mexico!

Participants use their pre-made passports to travel to Mexico. They identify more places around the world; learn/practice vocabulary describing personal information. They learn about Mexico’s customs, traditions, and holiday celebrations (Cinco de Mayo). Songs, games, chants and poems enrich the learning experience. Art project: Making own piñata (it takes several days to complete the project).

Week 5 and Week 6: Tapas en España

Participants journey through their imaginations and visit Spain. They use their pre-made passport and add the Spain flag. They learn about traditional flamenco music, sing Spanish folk songs about food, enjoy stories, and poems. They taste several foods that are typically served in Spain. Culinary art project: Tapas (appetizers).

Week 7 and Week 8 Vamos al Caribbe!

Participants take an imaginary trip to Cuba. They use their pre-made passport and add more flags. They identify more Spanish-speaking countries and talk about Cuba’s tropical geography. They identify tropical flora and fauna. They learn about Cuba’s food, and sing topic related songs. They make own maracas and dance the Cuban music.
